Antioch Christian Church Purchases Stoney Point YMCA

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA, MARCH 3, 2021 — The YMCA, like every organization, has experienced a year like no other.  Unprecedented challenges have met the association following a year of extended closures of YMCA facilities and major programs including Camp Wapsie summer camps.  This year has already been filled with recovery efforts and positive changes with the association, including its newest project becoming a reality for the Marion community.  However, recovery efforts will span years as the YMCA works to reallocate resources to continue to serve the community.
A lingering challenge remains the sale of a location within the association that is no longer financially sustainable after a year of unprecedented revenue loss.  The Stoney Point YMCA was listed for public sale in October of 2020 and has been limited in usage to members to allow for operations of YMCA child care services. This was yet another extremely difficult decision following the recent economic challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.  Following the public sale listing, the Cedar Rapids Metro YMCA has received and accepted an offer on the property.  Antioch Christian Church will be purchasing the Stoney Point YMCA in order to further expand its congregation.
This challenging decision has been made a little less hard knowing that a local nonprofit like Antioch Christian Church will continue to serve individuals and families on this side of town.  The church’s mission is closely aligned with the YMCA and offers similar programs in developing youth and connecting families.  “The Y has always thrived on partnerships within the community and is looking forward to further developing its relationship with the church in order to continue to serve this area in some capacity”, says Bob Carlson, President & CEO of the YMCA.
As Antioch pursues its mission of leading people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, the church believes the Stoney Point YMCA presents an excellent opportunity to develop a faith community in SW Cedar Rapids.  “We aim to accomplish our strategy with the purchase of the Stoney Point YMCA by offering dynamic weekend services and children’s, student, and adult programming each weekend and throughout the week”, says Pastor Greg Johnson of Antioch Christian Church.  The church also plans to partner with the Y in the future to continue to offer sports and activities to the community and the church. Construction on the building will begin this fall with a grand opening targeted for spring of 2022.
The sale of the Stoney Point YMCA does not result in an immediate change in the current availability to members and child care participants. Throughout the next several months, the YMCA will be working on timing of changes to the building’s operations as child care services transition back into elementary school sites.  The YMCA would like to thank its members and community partners for their support throughout this past year and looks forward to partnering on programs and services with Antioch Christian Church.
The Y is one of the nation’s leading nonprofits strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Across the U.S., 2,700 YMCAs engage 21 million men, women and children – regardless of age, income or background – to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve the nation’s health and well-being, and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Anchored in more than 10,000 communities, the Y has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver lasting personal and social change.
Antioch is a vibrant and growing church with campuses in Marion, Oelwein, and online. It’s mission is to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Antioch’s strategy to fulfill its mission is to create environments and opportunities where kids, students, and adults can worship, grow, and serve.
