What’s the latest “storm” you and/or your family has faced?

Of the hardships that Spurgeon faced (as described in the article), which one sounded the most difficult? Which one could you resonate with the most?
If someone asked you why God allows bad things to happen to his people, how might you answer?
Psalm 46:1-2 says that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (NIV). Can you think of a time in your life in which you experienced God as your “refuge and strength”? How did he help you during that time?

Lord, when I go through a season of suffering, I pray that I would experience you as my shelter in the storm. Remind me of your faithfulness. In such seasons, let me cling to you and grow in my faith. I trust in you, and I trust that you are doing something good even in tough seasons.

What’s a problem you’ve faced that you just couldn’t solve on your own, even when you tried hard?

Can you remember a time in which you came to the “end of yourself,” and you had to cry out to God for help?
On a scale of 1-10, how much do you trust in God? (Let’s say that “1” is cynical about God and his goodness; “10” is wholehearted trust in his goodness)? What could help that number go up for you?

For today’s prayer, let’s pray Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. A “Sabbath” was a weekly pause for God’s people to rest and connect with God. When you think about you having a Sabbath each week, does it feel realistic or unrealistic? Exciting? Scary?

What are some areas in your life that you’re rushing through—areas in which you need to pause and bring God into?
In Matthew 6:25-27, Jesus says, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” In this passage, what are some reasons Jesus gives for why we shouldn’t have to worry?
What is one or two steps you need to take this week so that you can pause and spend quality time connecting with God?

Lord, I make time for what I care about. Many times, I haven’t made time to connect with you. So, I confess that many times, I have not cared about you like I should. Help me to pause and realize how much I need you. Show me how to pause and really connect with you so that our relationship is real and unhurried.

Most days, how do feel about yourself?

If someone were to ask you what God thinks about you, how would you respond?
In the article, what does Mark mean he says that, when it comes to God feels about us, we sometimes “forget whether we’re supposed to be the defendant or whether we’re the judge and jury”?
Colossians 1:19-23 (quoted at the end of the article) tells us what God thinks about us. What truths do you learn about yourself from those verses?

Lord, help me to see myself the way you see me. Your perspective about me is what matters. Sometimes, I spend too much time obsessing about what other people think about me. Sometimes, I obsess about covering up my flaws. Help me to come to you and live in the light of your presence. Your Word tells us that if we “approach God’s throne of grace,” we will “receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). Thank you for loving me!

Can you think of something you did—which was hard—so that it would allow you to be able to do something else? For example, lift weights (which was hard) in order to get in shape? Or write a bunch of papers (which was hard) so that you could pass classes and earn your degree?

Lord, I want to grow spiritually. I want my family to grow spiritually. I want our faith in you to grow. I want our love for other people to grow. I want you to use us to help other people come to know you. These spiritual disciplines are important ways that can help us grow. Open our eyes to what spiritual discipline you want us to focus on and give us the perseverance to do it.
